What is
There is a world-wide movement where businesses and individuals aim at changing the world for the better. Attention for innovative enterprises that have a primary social mission is growing.
These so-called social enterprises do not aim for financial gain in the first place but for having a meaningful activity; just like young adults who increasingly express the wish to offer an added value to their local society and region. On the other hand, the situation of young adults in Europe asks for further innovation and the development of a supporting network. As proven, intervention policies at the individual level provide a support mechanism that is tailored to young people’s needs which works best. One way of intervention is mentoring which focuses on the personal development of young adults. It binds generations in the activity of sharing experience and knowledge. SESAME aims at tackling problems like school dropouts, youth unemployment and the growing need for support from young entrepreneurs. SESAME Goals are:
Fasten social and labour market inclusion of young people and help them move forwards fulfilling their potential.
Create a powerful network formed by young people, education, businesses and local communities while equipping them with a social entrepreneurial skillset.
Promote social entrepreneurial innovation among young generations.
Activities help to set in motion young adults, education, businesses and local communities, and equip them with an entrepreneurial skillset to promote social entrepreneurial innovation as a way to realise change. The strategic partnership activates multi-sectoral partners across Europe who support young entrepreneurial talents and new ideas in order to solve social problems.
Project SESAME wants to accelerate social inclusion of young adults, and enable them to utilise their full potential on their way to the labour market. This will be achieved by creating a connection between developing personal talents and ambitions. It combines possible alienation from the socio-economic mainstream of society with successful methods in (re-)engagement.
Development of
The activities of the SESAME project make a unique combination between the ambitions and potentials of young adults, and the method of social enterprise, by means of improving curricula.
By developing training materials and an academic minors, the torch will stay burning. The combination of social entrepreneurship and mentoring will be supported by society. It is based on the wisdom and strength of people, causing empowerment. It is less influenced by power, control of money or governments.
The project kicked off in September 2014 and will be concluded in August 2017. After the project, SESAME will be evolved into a permanent and sustainable EU network on Social Entrepreneurship and Mentoring. The following products, i.e. Intellectual Outputs, will be developed during the lifespan of the project and uploaded on this platform in the section SESAME products.
Research report on the status quo situation of social entrepreneurship and mentoring in the partner countries (NL, LT, FI, UK, ES, TR). What is available in education? How are young people stimulated to be entrepreneurial? Are there networks of mentors for them? What is available as for training entrepreneurial mindsets?
The Training Social Enterprise is a series of lessons, workshops and activities for young people at school, or outside, about the topic of social enterprise and social entrepreneurial behaviour. The aim of the course is to let young people gain (social) entrepreneurial skills that are needed now and later on the labour market. By participating in the training, they improve their future employability. The course gives them insight into the various practical applications of (social) entrepreneurial topics. Therefore the training lessons are characterised by hands-on, active and practical learning including examples from practice. The course can be used by different organisations and institutions, such as VET’s, universities of applied sciences, incubators and other organisations that offer teaching and training activities for youth.
Important part in project SESAME is the creation of a supporting network that offer role models for participating youth. These mentors coach and guide young people in the process of learning, and developing their social entrepreneurial activities and skills. Setting up such a supporting network and match young people with a mentor is a powerful customized service, and requires guidelines. The Mentor Method Social Enterprise gives know-how to organizations about engaging stakeholders and creating a supporting network of mentors.
An online toolkit contains multiple tools for young people aspiring social entrepreneurship and their mentors or teachers around Europe. It offers inspiration, peer examples, practical exercises and introduction to further learning.
All results (outputs), events and activities of project SESAME led to the integration of social enterprise supported by mentoring, in the strategy of VET’s, businesses and authorities on a regional, national and EU level. This manual offers the synergy of the outputs and methodology, including the lessons learned in the process of implementation and innovation.
Project SESAME has resulted in the development of several one-stop shops in the partner countries. They have been planned and organised in different ways based on the varying needs, existing resources and backgrounds of the organizing society also taking care of the special needs of the young target group. Read about the different one-stop shops in the Netherlands, Lithuania, United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey and Finland.
